TIFF File Format

IMPORTANT:  If you will be using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator/EPS format, CorelDraw or Microsoft Publisher, you MUST use the free design templates we have available for download FOR THESE SOFTWARE PROGRAMS/FORMATS in the appropriate "Download Templates" section of our Design Guidelines page. This will ensure the least hassle possible when preparing your designs for plating, which will virtually guarantee quicker turnaround and accurate, sharp print results. These templates are already set in CMYK mode, at the correct bleed design size, margins and resolution. All you need to do is open the template and start designing. Please make sure you save the template with the same settings originally embedded, but feel free to RENAME each file to your liking. Renaming won't change any settings unless you allow that to happen.


Also known as Tagged Image File Format. Designs saved as TIFFs at the appropriate resolution (355 dpi) work well for our full-color process printing, and if you can't provide original designs in vector format (Illustrator, EPS, Corel, Quark, PDF or Publisher formats) we suggest you find a way to "Export", or "Save As" in TIFF format.

A number of programs allow you to save as TIFFs:

  1. Photoshop
  2. Illustrator (or EPS files opened in Illustrator)
  3. CorelDraw

Here are a few pointers and tips for converting your design files to TIFF format using the programs mentioned above:

Photoshop:

  1. First make sure your design is in CMYK mode. To do this, click the "Image" menu, then "Mode", then click "CMYK". Easy! Your file is now in CMYK mode.
  2. Make sure your design resolution is at exactly 355 dpi, with "Document Size" at 3.625" x 2.125". Check this by clicking the "Image" menu, then "Image Size". In the "Image Size" box, make sure your width is set to 3.625 inches, height is at 2.125" and Resolution is set to 355 pixels/inch or higher. At 355 dpi, your width/height is difficult to set EXACTLY to 3.625" x 2.125". It's ok if it's SLIGHTLY off, such as 3.626 x 2.124. Slight higher is better, if it's off.
  3. Next, click the "File" menu, then "Save As". In the "Save As" box, select "TIFF" in the "Format" pull-down menu. Then, name your TIFF file, and click "Save". That's it!

Illustrator (or EPS files opened in Illustrator:

  1. With your design file open in Adobe Illustrator, click the "File" menu, then "Export".
  2. In the "Export" box, select "TIFF" in the "Save as type" pull-down menu, then name your TIFF file.
  3. Click "Save".
  4. In the "TIFF Options" box, "Color Model" should be CMYK.
  5. Resolution should be 355 dpi (select "Other" or "Custom" and enter 355 manually).
  6. "Anti-Alias" should be check-marked.
  7. "Byte Order" should be Macintosh.
  8. Click "OK". You're done!

CorelDraw:

  1. With your design open in CorelDraw, click any edge of the card design. This will display the width/height measurement of the document set-up, which should be at 3.625" x 2.125". If it's not, resize until it is.
  2. Click the "File" menu, then "Export". The "Export" box opens.
  3. Name your TIFF file, then select "TIF - TIFF Bitmap" in the "Files of type" pull-down menu.
  4. For "Compression Type", select "Uncompressed".
  5. Everything else leave alone.
  6. Click "Export"
  7. In the "Bitmap Export" box, "Color" should be "CMYK Color (32-bit)", both "Anti-aliasing" and "Apply ICC profile" should be checked.
  8. For "Resolution", select "Custom", then manually enter 355 for Horizontal, 355 for Vertical. Everything else will change automatically after making these selctions.
  9. Click "OK", and you're finished!
